The hyphenated adjective “site-specific” is generally used to describe art that is created to exist and gain context from its placement within a particular site. The hyphen in the title of this show was intentionally dropped to differentiate the work done by three artists: John Newlander, Julie Easton, and Gary Simpson.
While location is taken into account in the creation of these artists’ works, the art products are not intended to exist at the site. Rather their art uses sites only as references to develop a dialogue and to anchor the meaning of their work.
Twelve 16" x 20" photographs first exhibited at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art as part of the Site Specific show.
The photographs document those places that 12 volunteers offered as being places most beautiful to them in Orange County, CA. Volunteers were solicited via CraigsList, a centralized network of online communities, featuring free classifed advertising and forums on various topics. The installation included the electronic communication between the artist and the volunteer.
Volunteers were invited to the opening reception where they had the opportuity to meet and dialogue with each other and the public on their interpretation of beauty. They were recognized for their contribution with a signed archival print (2 of 2) of their chosen site and an installation calendar.
