Newlander became involved with the arts in 1991 at the mature age of forty. His understanding of pedestrian and high culture has provided him with a uniquely balanced societal grounding; the metaphorical language of his art reflects an understanding of the quotidian. Newlander possess a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies with majors in art and aesthetics and a Master of Fine Arts in Visual Art degree with a concentration in gender and identity. His art reflects his personal and philosophical interpretations of the society and culture that combine to construct his identity.
